Air-Cooled Appreciation Society Weekend: The Hill
March 9, 2024 |8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Free – £10
With the arrival of spring, the air carries a warmth that promises longer days ahead. As we anticipate the clocks springing forward at the end of March, another beloved tradition comes to life: the return of the Air-Cooled Appreciation Society to the Yards, starting from April as a monthly gathering. To inaugurate the ACAS season, we’re dedicating the weekend of March 30th and 31st to celebrate air-cooled machinery.
The enduring popularity of air-cooled vehicles is a marvel. Despite their rarity even in their prime and now existing mainly among a dwindling number of motorcycles, they continue to captivate enthusiasts. The distinct hum of an engine cooled by air and oil holds an irresistible allure, proven by the steadfast admiration for these machines.
Undoubtedly, the Porsche 911 plays a pivotal role in this admiration. For nearly 35 years, it remained loyal to air-cooling when others were transitioning, showcasing its prowess uniquely. The pre-’98 models, with their iconic profile and vibrant colours, now grace the screens of Instagram, embodying a lifestyle many aspire to attain.
The dominance of the 911 in the air-cooled discourse is unsurprising. From the early slender-bodied variants to the raw power of the 993 GT2, it exemplifies the capabilities of air-cooled technology.
Volkswagen also merits recognition, maintaining exclusive use of air cooling until 1970 and coexisting with water cooling for decades thereafter. From the classic Beetle and Transporter to more obscure models like the SP2 and the Fridolin, VW’s innovative rear-engine platform birthed an array of vehicles that garnered devoted followings.
While ACAS celebrates Porsches and Volkswagens, its embrace extends to a diverse array of vehicles. Triumphs, Harleys, Moto Guzzis, Tatras, 2CVs, Corvairs — all possess that distinctive charm bestowed only by an air-cooled engine.
